Anne-Margaretha Charters
organizes adventurous sailing trips in the seas North and South of
Europe, in the Netherlands, and now world-wide. Our ship, the Anne-Margaretha is a sturdy steel vessel with two masts. Her maiden voyage was to Norway in the year 2000. The Anne-Margaretha exceeds all official Dutch maritime regulations.
WHO ARE WE?
The captains Heinz Wutschke and Greet Dekker are also the proud owners of the 22 meter sailing vessel, the Anne-Margaretha, a ship we built
ourselves. Once we had a dream to sail our own ship together with
friends and guests over the oceans far away from the crowded life to
enjoy everything that makes the sea so special.
We are still surprised by spectacular sunrises and sunsets, starry
skies, moonlit and moonless nights, dolphins who play for hours
alongside our ship and of course the whales, very close to the
Anne-Margaretha!
Step by step our dream came true. In 2007-2008 we made our first world
trip and sailed via Lisbon to the Canary Islands, the Cape Verde
Islands, and on to Brazil. From Salvador da Bahaia and Rio de Janeiro
we sailed to the southernmost point of Argentina – Ushuaia - our point
of departure for three expeditions to Antarctica, the great, silent,
white continent. On our return trip, we discovered the incredible
natural beauty of the western coast of South America, including
Patagonia, the Galapagos, Panama Canal, and the Caribbean. In 2009 we've started our 2nd worldtrip to the South again!
Heinz has been a shipbuilder and -restorer for 25 years and has a lot
of experience in expedition-sailing trips. All his knowledge he has put
in the Anne-Margaretha, which became a safe, sturdy, easy sailing ship.
Greet sailed her whole life and has a lot of experience also with organizing long sailing trips all over the world.

The Anne-Margaretha follows in the wake of Darwin
One hundred and seventy years after the publication of Darwin’s research journal, The Voyage of the Beagle, the Anne-Margaretha will follow in his footsteps. The great Charles Darwin recorded his adventures in letters to his family which served as the basis for his later work. The Beagle left England late 1831, arriving some weeks later at the Cape Verde Islands. Here Darwin, inspired by his initial geological work, decided to record his observations in his seminal book. Darwin crossed the Atlantic Ocean benefitting from the trade winds, as does the Anne-Margaretha. We celebrate Charles Darwin’s 200th birthday this year with our own voyage.
Brazil
Like Darwin, our first harbor will be Salvador da Bahia, Brazil. The Beagle sailed along the east coast of South America and arrived in November at its southernmost point, the Tierra del Fuego. The Anne-Margaretha will sail this part in a much shorter time than did Darwin: we will take 3 months, he took 12.... Darwin went on to the Falklands Islands which we will visit another time, we hope!
Patagonia - Chile
Antarctica (this trip will be described separately) was not visited by the Beagle. Instead he continued through the Straits of Magellan south of Patagonia, arriving at the west coast of South America. The Anne-Margaretha picks up his old route again here. We will also visit the island of Chiloe, where we'll find influences of its indigenous people. The Beagle went further on to the north: to Valdivia ( here we have some good memories!), Concepción, and then to the beautiful town of Valparaíso. This town boasts a labyrinth of streets and cobblestone alleyways, embodying a rich architectural and cultural legacy. Valparaíso is protected as a Unesco World Heritage Site and is often considered to be one of Latin America's most intriguing urban areas.
We will sail further on to Mendoza, Callao, some wonderful islands before the coast and finally arriving in Arica. This northernmost Chilean town receives 0% annual precipitation (!) Vegetables and fruit are cultivated 80 miles away in the Andes. Darwin stayed years in South America and sailed in 1835 to the Galápagos Islands.
Galápagos Islands
The giant turtle Harriet, born around 1830 on the Galapágos and moved by Darwin to Australia, died in 2006, 176 years later in a zoo. Darwin discovered so much on these islands, where we still see varied and glorious wildlife. The Anne-Margaretha visited the Galápagos in 2008 and we were impressed by its remarkable beauty. We snorkeled between sea turtles, rays, and sharks all coexisting in good harmony. We also played with young seals, who under the attentive eye of their mothers, permitted us to bask on their shelves. It truly feels like being in prehistory!
The Anne-Margaretha goes her own way then....
After the Galápagos Islands rather than sailing to Haiti as did Darwin, we’ll sail on to Panama where we make the adventurous trip through the Panama Canal. We can be seen at home via the webcams along the locks: a small, brave Dutch ship between the ocean-going giants.... We won't have much time in the Caribbean, skirting the hurricane season, but we will certainly visit Cuba.
Cuba
Last year Cuba was also a highlighted for many reasons: they have very strict vessel controls, but our crew with its usual humor and patience, and knowing that we have nothing to hide, will partake again in this adventure. The Cubans are a very friendly people and music permeates the island. This colourful place is well worth the visit!
Bermuda-Azores
After Cuba we go to sea again to Bermuda. In this archipelago we'll rejoice with a short visit to buy fresh fruit and vegetables. We then embark on our ocean trip to the Azores, the archipelago with nine inhabited islands.
The Azores
The Azores is the moment in our World Trip where we take a break.... We ( the captains and friends/family) will relax, sailing from one island to the other. We will spend almost two weeks exploring these islands and recommend walking, hiking, snorkeling, even renting a car or bike if you wish. The lovely climate and natural habitat full of flowers (hydrangeas, roses!), the friendly people and also not unimportantly, the affordable prices, make the Azores a very pleasant holiday destination! We are then ready for the leg to Europe.
Spain
La Coruña, a harbour in the NW of Spain, is almost our “home” harbour. We enjoy the beautiful architectonic town and its delicious food bars.... After several days we'll leave this part of the world and start crossing the Bay of Biscay. Here we have some sweet memories: in 2008 during two days rorquals, a species of baleen whales, visited our ship and our son Sam could not resist swimming with these giants. They were so close that they looked eye to eye .... After swimming away the rorqual came back, curious... who was that person?? Some other guests also went into the water and had a real once-in-a-lifetime experience...! Who knows if we will have this happy experience in 2010??
Alderney
Alderney, a British Channel Island known for its friendly people and inviting towns, welcomes us in a small harbor where we anchor. We will enjoy a stroll to local cafés for cake and a dramatic view over the bay! This being British territory, they still don't accept the Euro. They even have their own currency, but accept the British pound sterling.
France
Depending on the weather and wind, we will visit several harbors along the French coast (St. Malo, Dieppe.) An array of lighthouses, one more picturesque than the next, watch over us and the French coastline with its thousands of creeks and bays. Here we'll spot many historical sailing ships plying the coast. From this beautiful European welcome, we turn towards our home base in the Netherlands.
The Netherlands
Our 2nd Worldtrip will be complete....
Perhaps the next Great Trip will go far to the North..!
We will inform you on this website. Stay tuned.
