To Spitsbergen

In 2011 the Anne-Margaretha makes true a dream again: a trip to Spitsbergen!
In June and July 2011 We will sail 2 legs (partly) around Spitsbergen. Passing by the Lofoten in May, we take time to visit this part of Norway and we hope to spot the whales! Norway has found out here also that spotting the whales here is better than shooting..!
We will make a wonderful trip to the North and back and take enough time for visiting the Norwegian coast. We will pass by Bergen and Alesund for sure!

Descriptions of the sailingtrips:

NB: Sailing in these regions is dependent on weather and wind and in the far north on the ice drift, so the days and route may change. (Start and end dates are fixed, of course!)

IJmuiden (the Netherlands)- Bergen (Norway)
appr. 500 Miles

This trip starts April 21 at the locks of IJmuiden,  Holland. We’ll sail to Norway in about 3.5 days where its majestic mountains greet us on the horizon. Our first port of call is the nice town of Stavanger. We will then visit the old town (the “Gammele”) and overnight there. The next day we visit the Lysefjord and moor at the foot of the Preekestulen, a hugh rock of 600m which we will climb if you’re up to it! On top of this rock there is an outstanding view over the fjord and far below you will probably see a very small Anne-Margaretha…! We will stay here for the night and next morning we’ll proceed within the islands to Haugesund, a friendly little town. After visiting this town, the Anne-Margaretha sails to the Hardangerfjord. Near the little village Sunndal we can make a mountain trek to the Bondhus glacier with its spectacular views and scenery! Then we will sail to Bergen, where we will arrive May 2.

Dates: April 21- May 2
Days: 12
Prices: € 795, € 895* per person in a 2-person cabin

*The highest price is for a midship cabin with private bathroom

Bergen( Norway) to Bodo
appr. 600 Miles

We embark near the picturesque Norwegian town of Bergen. Via the Hjeltefjord, the Anne-Margaretha sails north to meet the open sea. Our voyage continues for two days and nights at which point we arrive in Florø, a charming island village in the middle an archipelago. From Florø the Anne-Margeretha meanders peacefully between the islands to Statt(landet). Within a few hours, sailing through the middle route, we arrive in Ǻlesund, a welcoming town hidden behind the Heissafjord.

From Ǻlesund, we sail in about one day to Ona, an island known for its birds with only about 30 inhabitants. After visiting Ona we proceed north and head for Rørvik, a small village on a group of islands. This protected area is sanctuary to many bird species, otters and porpoises. After a hike on Rørvik, we sail further north and we cross into the polar circle (66º 30′)! Because of the warm Gulf Stream we still will not see ice as we have seen in Antarctica at this latitude.
Depending on weather and wind we will proceed within the islands or over sea and arrive in Bodø on May 15 in the evening or May 16 in the morning.

Dates: May 5-16 2012
Days: 12
Price: € 795/ € 895  per person in a 2-person cabin

*The highest price is for a midship cabin with private bathroom

Lofoten  trip: Bodø-Tromsø
appr. 400 Miles

This  trip will become a voyage of discovery!
You’ll embark in Bodø, where we will inform you, depending on weather and wind, the route for the first days.

We will sail via Reine on the Lofoten. You will be surprised by lovely little towns and villages and exhilirating fjords where we will anchor.

This part of Norway has inspired many artists and we will view some galleries and perhaps even the artist!

Places we will visit are for sure: Svolvaer, Vaeroy, Stamsund and Kabelvaag.

Since this trip is a combination of walking and sailing we will often look for a peaceful bay to anchor where we’ll go ashore to walk and hike. Bird lovers and anglers especially will enjoy this part of Norway. If we are lucky we may spot an orca! In the evening you’ll come on board where a nice dinner will be served.
During the voyage, you can sail with our crew as much as your heart desires.

Dates: May 19-29
Days: 11
Prices: € 995/ € 1095* per person in a 2-person cabin

*The highest price is for a midship cabin with private bathroom

Tromso-Bear Island (Bjornoya)- Spitsbergen (Longyearbyen)
600 Miles

We embark in Tromsø where the sun seldom sets, leaving via the Grøtsundet to the Barendsz sea,

After sailing about 2.5 days and nights we arrive at Bear Island, a triangular island ca. 120 M. south of Sørkapp, Spitsbergen’s most southerly point.

The Dutchman Willem Barendsz named this island in 1596.

We will visit this fascinating island, the home of a Norwegian radio and weather station. On the east coast some anchorages work for us and depending on the weather, we will remain for several hours or a night. In the spring and summer polar bears are uncommon here but the polar fox can be seen!
From this area, we proceed further north and pass beyond 75° latitude! After one day of sailing, we will spot the spectacular mountains of Spitsbergen. If possible, (which means not too much ice drift,) we will sail into the Hornsundet and Recherchefjord with its glacier and ice walls!

Monday June 11 we arrive in Longyearbyen, the destination of this trip.

Dates: June 1-11
Days: 11
Price: € 995/ € 1095*  per person in a 2-person cabin

*The highest price is for a midship cabin with private bathroom

Roundtrip Spitsbergen
(var. miles)
General information:

Climate: The warm Gulf Stream has a big influence on the climate of the west coast of Spitsbergen. Since the temperature is rather mild we will see varied flora and fauna. In the summer the temp. will be around + 6° C. The east coast is influenced by the northerly polar winds and it’s much colder. Because of the low atmospheric humidity the temp. usually feels less cold.

Flora and fauna: On the tundras and cliffs we will see all kind of mosses and flowers. The cliffs are also a favorite breeding ground for sea birds like puffins and glaucous gulls, etc
The tundras are the natural habitat for polar foxes and reindeer. Along the coastline we will meet walruses and seals. The most well known arctic animal is of course the polar bear. Normally they stay on/near the ice pack, but in past years polar bears have been seen near Longyearbyen, our harbour where the Anne-Margaretha starts and ends. That’s why all excursions will include armed guides!
The trips are between June 15 and August 5, the period when we will see a lot of breeding birds and flowers.

An example of a Round Trip with the Anne-Margaretha:
(This timetable is in draft form! Since we are completely dependant upon the weather circumstances and the ice drift, the program may change. We’ll make as many landings as possible, but the captain and crew are responsable for the safety of everybody. Safety over all!)

Day 1: Longyearbyen

Arrive and board the Anne-Margarethe. We will show you the ship and do a safety check with all of you. Then we will brief you about the next several days. You may still have time to visit the Svalbard Museum which has an interesting collection from the history of Spitsbergen.

Day 2: Isfjord, Alkhornet, Trygghamna:

We sail to the north of the Isfjord and set course for Alkhornet, a sea bird cliff with a large colony of Kittiwakes. We continue to Trygghamna (fjord) and look for a sheltered anchorage to go ashore to visit the remains of English and Russian stations.

We leave Trygghamna and sail, depending on the direction of the wind, either to Brucebukta (Prins Karls Forland), or to Eidembukta. There are good walking possibilities. Prins Karls Forland is a nature reserve, where we can see seals, walruses and thousands of birds.

Via the Forlandsundet we will sail to the north. The end of this sound is small and rather shallow, so we’ll design the program depending of the eventual ice drift. With the help of a good wind we will land on Fuglebuken or Engelskbukta, where we can go ashore for a walk.

We continue via the Kongsfjorden to Ny Ålesund, a village with the most northerly post office in the world! This village is a centre for polar research and a former starting point for North Pole expeditions such as Amundsen and Nobile) The birds here ( some species of geese and eiders) are very tame. You may also see some reindeer.

We continue sailing north where we will visit the Krossfjorden and the 14th of July Glaciers where there is a breeding site for Brünnich’s Guillemots, Auks and Puffins. Also there’s rather rich vegetation with many species of flowers. With some luck you’ll see the polar fox…

We sail further north, reaching 80º latitude! Compared to latitudes in Antarctica: we would have reached “just” 65º south…. Then we will proceed to one of the most spectacular fjords here: the Magdalenafjord, which we will visit, of course. After sailing around we will look for a sheltered anchorage at Trinity Haven. If possible, we will make a landing.

Leaving the Magdalenafjord, we sail to Smeerenburgfjor, Fair Haven and then to Ytre Norskøya (køya= island). We will find here the remains of the Dutch whalers, such as blubber ovens, graves etc. Also we can find bird cliffs with breeding Artic Skuas and Common Eiders. This point was a former lookout point for Dutch whalers.

Now we set course for the Woodfjord , Liefdefjord and Reinsdyrflya. Over 1000 reindeer reside on this vast tundra. This is also the place to spot Red-throated Divers and King Eiders. In 2011 we’ve seen here several polar bears!

As far the ice drift allows, we will sail eastward to Mosselbukta where we will go ashore.

We will try to cross Hinlopen Strait, which is probably still covered with a lot of ice. Then we’ll proceed to Florabukta, where we have a big chance to spot polar bears and walruses.

Then we will proceed to the west again and visit the magnificant Raudfjorden, where there are polar bears (!), beluga whales and bearded seals.

We can explore the Raudfjorden, going ashore where possible with the zodiacs. We will visit some spectacular glaciers.

Then we will weigh anchor and set course to Smeerenburg, to see the last seven ovens of the 17th century Dutch whalers. This little place is on Amsterdam Island.

It’s time to course to the south again and drop anchor near Sarstangen, opposite Prins Karls Forland. If possible we’ll go ashore for a walk.

This is our last sailing trip to the Isfjord and at the end of the day we’ll arrive in Longyearbyen.
Departure day. Say goodbye to the Anne-Margaretha and her crew…
